Colorado’s King
Soopers and City Market
grocery chains will appeal
last week’s court
ruling prohibiting them from
giving customers gasoline
discounts with grocery
purchases. A U.S. District
Court jury in Colorado
decided that the grocery
stores violated the
state’s Unfair
Practices Act by selling gas
below cost via the discount
program, and ordered the
program to be
discontinued. The jury also
said the grocery chains
should pay $200,000 in
damages, according to
court documents. Via its
“Buy Groceries/Get Gas”
promotion, consumers
using their grocery
customer cards could
qualify for a discount of 3
cents a gallon. They could
get a 7-cent discount if
they bought $100 in
groceries
